Designing your garden space….
…..July, please, please, let’s see that lovely sunshine, so we can utilise our gardens. With all the flower shows happening, and giving everyone ideas for the garden it’s a fun time of year, to finish off jobs, getting to entertain, eating outside, picking cut flowers from the garden or just lounging in the sun with a G&T. With one big garden design down we are moving onto the next, it’s always a strange moment when you walk away, even the clients say, we are going to miss everyone being here and talking about it, but it’s then your time to enjoy the space created. We’ll pop back and take some pics when everything is settled. We eventually got rain in June as usual so that slowed some jobs down especially on the gardening side, but it was good for our planting plans that were coming to fruition, one in particular will be fun to show you once settled in as the brief was ‘lots of colour and blousy please’ of course that was great shopping for us, it always is fun anyway but sometimes there’s more of a buzz! Excuse the pun, all the busy bees, which we must encourage. Wildlife gardens and naturalist planting are becoming more popular, and this is a lovely way of planting especially in those spaces that suit such schemes. However, you can still have your wildlife even if your planting schemes are more controlled, there are so many plants in this world that encourage more species into our gardens, the smallest steps can be just as effective in your environment than you think, a small tree will encourage birds, natural hedgerows are great for food, simple plants like foxgloves are great for insects, and don’t forget the natural predators within the insect world can help with your garden and it’s development. Designing your garden space….
…..June is here, and we are hoping for it to be warmer than last month so we can enjoy the garden, with entertaining or pottering about. We are doing a lot of plant shopping which is fun, when you find what you want, but some lovely planting on our last couple of Garden Designs, which is good when you can finish a project off and see it through, and get the lovely pics needed. It can make such a difference when the whole project is done at once, because you can get the build done and then leave empty beds and borders, which then start to fill with weeds if you don’t get round to the plant choices straight away, the other thing it will never look finished, so always take this into account when thinking about the plant side of things. As a Member of the Chartered institute of Horticulture, I would love to encourage planting schemes with creativity in the garden, whether it’s wildlife or Mediterranean to having the right trees, and yes in a small space you can still have a tree it just needs to be the right choice, which is where we can help. Coming up, we have another pond revamp, large to small for a change but still needs the correct set up and build to get right. Also, some smaller projects are now starting, from a bespoke compost area to front of house re-vamp for a sculpture and with a new terrace and Pleached trees, just to be starting. We hope those of you who made it to Chelsea Flower Show or any of the others so far this year have enjoyed and got some inspiration, we are always looking for new and creative ideas for our clients and it normally does come from them, a little spark can make all the difference on a project. …..May – This is when you are definitely stepping out and enjoying the garden, we’ve enjoyed a good winter encountered the April showers and still managed to counter on. What will be your garden project this year, we have worked on some amazing projects recently and glad to see water has become part of our lives again. The team have worked on a removing an old garden to replace with new beds and borders and framing, we are then getting ready to plant this up to show it off in all it’s glory, we will make sure you get to see this, watch this space. Sleepers have been a theme for a while it’s definitely a consistent product, the last couple of years it’s been steel in the garden, which I do enjoy the change in effect in the elements and the same with copper. Copper is what we have used to make Rose Arches, Crooks and it’s also been used as uprights to the banisters of our own pergola. There are certain materials that work, but remember don’t use too many, it’s best to get ideas out there and then ask for a design it will help build a picture, especially if you aren’t sure what you need or want from your garden. As the industry changes and it is, for us it’s noticeable especially from a planting point of view, varieties are not available when they used to be, growers are changing the way they do things, where this change is coming from, we are not sure. It could be a combination of trade, domestic and of course international issues, as although we have some great growers in this country we do buy from abroad as well. It’s been hard this winter as I have been unable to purchase the perennials, I would normally have the choice to, some nurseries have changed what they buy in or what they grow, and this must be due to demand. I would like to say the autumn and winter are the best times to plant like this as the plant gets to settle, and does not require quite so much attention the following year, now it seems it’s purchase in spring/summer and water like crazy, seems mad to me but maybe they know something I don’t. However, we are battling with and hopefully winning, we are still working hard, on the design and landscaping needs of our clients, one material on our next project will be a composite deck emerging from a modern office. With planting and patio to compliment the whole garden looking forward to seeing that design finished. At present the team are finish another pond, this one is slightly out of the ground, client request and Christian has had to use his expertise when it comes to the pump and filter, he never falters when it comes to ponds so here’s to the next one. …..and the garden appreciates the love put into in it’s veins, still working away and seeing some amazing projects continue and the fruits of our labour come to life. Having looked at the forecast for the month of April it’s looking ok, but this is England so who knows! Be prepared, we will be working on a rather lovely Garden Design with some interesting materials, composites, natural stone and lots of wonderful plants. As designers we have to obviously keep to a limit of materials as you don’t want to confuse the look, it’s all about textures, lines, practicality as with any room it’s to be used, whether with admiration or for the children to run around while you admire the view and the plants or the simplicity of lines and everything is in it’s place (just so you know nature does not comply to this rule) it’s all about choice. One note if you are thinking of changing things remember to tie into your home, what’s your abode made from, pick a highlight if it’s the brick, stone, render or weatherboard, it will give us a starting point. It’s nice to include something personal, from a post box to a personally designed Heron stake for the pond using a local forge, (to keep the fish safe) using many local trades as possible. Dry walls being built, another pond and a rip out of old sleepers for new and beds, looking out for the tree with the TPO, (we always have to check). If you are thinking of doing something in your outside room, give us a call as we can offer Designs and Consultancy as well as the landscaping itself. We also offer Horticultural advice and planting plans as part of our Design selections. We are a local company that can help you create the space you would love. In the last Month we have done our re-design on the View and Pond and are planning the plants for the new borders, graded out the old beds and giving the beautiful Silver Birches prominence. New stone steps to divide and deliver the red carpet to showcase that view so wished for. The pond delivered a few surprises, on removing the remnants of what was there, we discovered four liners and a completely different shape underneath, but the shape was good so we have kept this and started from scratch on lining as you should on making a pond to last. Our next garden is a York Stone wall for a terraced area and possibly a brick and flint side wall which we have done before, a stunning feature. Then onto another pond and sleeper beds to help terrace a graded garden and to create low maintenance beds, enough to potter but not too much heavy work. Next up an amazing back garden design, a brand new look so we are looking forward to this we will give you more insights when we are there so remember to keep up with the article. We are still working our own project for a possible future show garden, lots of ideas but we must keep to our own brief as this is the trick of a successful Garden. So, we should be able to achieve this. If you are thinking of doing something in your outside room, give us a call as we can offer Designs and Consultancy as well as the landscaping itself.
